Subsidence Insurance Claims

Subsidence is a gradual downward movement in the ground and supporting structure of your home with the walls and foundations being affected. Subsidence is a slowly occurring issue. You may not even notice any signs early on. The movement of the ground underneath your home causes small cracks to appear, that are naked to the eye at first. These cracks slowly expand to become 3mm wide or more. The first signs you notice can be the plaster on your wall getting a crack that may spread to resemble lightning bolts up the walls, you may also notice your doors and windows are sticking and jamming or your skirting boards are falling off the walls. You may also find that your floor is uneven and that floors are lifting. These are all signs that your home is experiencing subsidence.

Subsidence has many causes including:

  • Having trees planted close to your house can cause the soil to shift and dry out.
  • Living in an older building puts your home more at risk of subsidence as foundations may be shallower.
  • Drought conditions and dry weather can quickly dry up the soil.
  • Shoddy workmanship from previous structural works can leave soil and foundations uneven.
  • Water leakages and flooding can cause the soil to become saturated and your home to sink.

If your home is located close to old mines the ground may be unstable and prone to subsidence occurring.
